My independent clients are seeking a veterinary nurse to join them as the practice grows.
The role centres on delivering and maintaining exceptional standards of nursing care and professional performance. Working closely with Veterinary Surgeons, the position supports the delivery of best clinical practice while contributing to the effective day-to-day operation of the practice. Responsibilities include adhering to the professional standards set by the RCVS, maintaining up-to-date registration, and carrying out all duties with a high level of competence and professionalism. The role also involves supporting the Nurse Management Team and contributing to the development and efficiency of the wider nursing function.
This practice is committed to treating every patient with the same level of care and compassion as if they were their own animals, while ensuring clients are treated with respect, understanding, and clear communication. This ethos underpins all aspects of the working environment. Ongoing support and training are provided to ensure these standards are achieved and maintained.
A key aspect of the position is collaboration and communication. The role requires working closely with veterinary surgeons, nursing colleagues, and support staff to ensure seamless patient care. This includes assisting with clinical procedures in line with professional guidelines, maintaining accurate patient records, dispensing medications appropriately, and ensuring effective communication with clients throughout their pet’s care. Nurses are also involved in conducting nurse consultations, advising clients on general pet healthcare, and supporting reception duties when required, including patient admissions, discharges, and appointment coordination.
There is also a strong emphasis on mentorship and development within the team. The role includes supporting nursing assistants and student veterinary nurses, with opportunities to take on clinical coaching responsibilities where desired. Maintaining high standards of hygiene, stock control, and organisation across practice is another important responsibility, alongside ensuring all equipment and clinical areas are properly managed.
The position operates across two sites, requiring the same high standards of care in both locations. Duties may include inpatient and surgical nursing, assisting with treatments, conducting nurse clinics, and supporting reception tasks. From time to time, flexibility is required, including short-notice changes to work location to support team needs, or assisting with the transport of patients between sites where necessary.
Working hours are structured across a rotating shift pattern, covering early, daytime, evening, and late shifts. The role also includes participation in a shared rota for waking night shifts to support emergency and inpatient care, as well as weekend work on a rotational basis. Time off is provided to balance these commitments.
The practice offers a supportive working environment alongside a comprehensive benefits package. Annual leave begins at 5.6 weeks, including bank holidays, and increases with length of service. Additional benefits include a workplace pension, staff uniform, pet care discounts, and a range of wellbeing initiatives, including private healthcare and access to mental health support services. Employees also benefit from an employee assistance programme
The role requires a recognised veterinary nursing qualification, such as a Level 3 diploma, advanced apprenticeship, or degree. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong teamwork, organisation, and communication skills, alongside flexibility and effective time management. Personal qualities such as adaptability, a proactive approach, and a genuine passion for veterinary nursing are essential, as is the resilience to manage the emotional and physical demands of the role.
