My Client is an independent mixed veterinary practice with a team of 21 veterinary surgeons, all based on site. The majority of the team—14 vets—work in mixed practice, supported by dedicated specialists in small animal, poultry, pigs, and ruminants. This structure allows the practice to deliver comprehensive care across a wide range of species while meeting the diverse needs of its client base. The small animal team is led by an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Medicine
The main practice is purpose-built and located 20 minutes from York city centre and close to the Howardian Hills and North Yorkshire Moors. The facilities include three consultation rooms, a large operating theatre, a busy preparation area, and separate kennels for dogs and cats. Imaging facilities are housed in a dedicated room equipped for radiography and ultrasound scanning. In addition, the farm dispensary was relocated to a larger site where it now operates alongside a farmers’ shop and extensive warehouse, providing a convenient single location for farm supplies and veterinary support.
The practice maintains a strong reputation in mixed animal work and serves a large and expanding farm client base, ranging from smallholders to large commercial enterprises. Services include routine fertility visits, herd health planning for cattle and sheep, and specialist work such as bull and ram fertility testing using systems such as TotalVet and Vet Impress. The caseload is varied and can be tailored to individual interests, allowing veterinary surgeons to develop their preferred balance between small animal and farm work while remaining competent across all species, including out-of-hours responsibilities.
The working rota is structured to support both clinical coverage and work-life balance. Out-of-hours duties are shared evenly among 12 vets, with both first and second on-call roles operating on a 12-week rolling rota. Two vets are always on call, supported by a veterinary nurse, ensuring strong backup in emergency situations. The rota typically follows a 4.5-day working week, with a four-day week every fourth week, and includes time off in lieu following on-call duties as well as occasional Saturday mornings. This predictable rota structure enables forward planning of personal time and ensures fair distribution of responsibilities.
They place a strong emphasis on professional development and clinical support. The practice offers an unlimited CPD budget, encourages further qualifications, and provides protected study time during the working day. Regular in-house clinical meetings and an open-plan office environment foster collaboration and case discussion among colleagues. Additional benefits include paid RCVS and VDS fees, a generous annual leave allowance including extra time over the Christmas period, and a supportive team culture designed to promote both professional growth and personal wellbeing.
The practice is seeking a proactive Mixed Animal Veterinary Surgeon who is enthusiastic about delivering high-quality veterinary care and contributing to a collaborative team environment.
