We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a Night Veterinary Surgeon to join the experienced and welcoming team at a 24 hr hospital, recently refurbished and situated just a short drive from the breathtaking Jurassic Coast, provides a modern and supportive environment in which to develop your ECC skills while embracing the lifestyle benefits Dorset has to offer.
As a multi-disciplinary hospital with a strong regional presence, this hospital delivers out-of-hours care for 13 other practices. You will be working alongside a talented group of clinicians, including certificate holders in diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, dermatology and emergency and critical care. Several team members are currently pursuing further surgical and medical qualifications, creating a thriving atmosphere of collaboration, professional development and continuous learning.
The hospital is exceptionally well equipped to support high-quality emergency and critical care. Among the facilities available are a CT scanner for internal and referred patients, digital x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy. Two sterile theatres, a dedicated in-house laboratory, an on-site hydrotherapy unit staffed twice weekly, and the support of a peripatetic physiotherapist further enhance our clinical capability. They also provide isolation facilities and separate dog and cat wards, and the hospital proudly holds ISFM Silver Cat Friendly status. The night service is supported by an ECC-certified veterinary surgeon and a skilled nursing team, ensuring excellent continuity of care around the clock.
This role is suited to a veterinary surgeon with at least four years of UK experience who is confident working independently. As the position involves sole charge throughout the night, the ability to manage all aspects of emergency and critical care cases with the support of an RVN is essential, and previous ECC experience will be highly advantageous. The rota consists of two night shifts—Monday and Tuesday—every three weeks, with hours running from 18:45 to 09:00. This pattern provides an average of 9.5 working hours per week, offering a balance between fulfilling clinical work and valuable downtime.
Joining this practice brings a comprehensive package of support and rewards. From your first day, you will have access to Private Medical Insurance and a health cash plan that includes dental, physiotherapy and optical cover, along with a 24/7 Private GP service. Life Assurance is provided at three times your salary, and confidential counselling support is available by phone or in person whenever needed. Annual leave begins at five weeks plus Bank Holidays, increasing to six weeks with service, and is complemented by an additional paid ‘Day for You’. Professional development is fully supported through £1,500 annual CPD funding, three paid CPD days, internal learning opportunities, Clinical Communities and funded certificate routes. Professional fees for the VDS, RCVS and BVA are covered, and colleagues with longer service benefit from sabbatical opportunities. Practical benefits include an interest-free Season Ticket Loan, the Cycle to Work scheme, and full support for Certificates of Sponsorship for a Tier 2 (General) Visa, alongside relocation assistance.
We look forward to welcoming a committed and enthusiastic Night Veterinary Surgeon to this Dorchester team.
