My client in the borough of Redbridge is seeking a Veterinary Surgeon with a strong interest in internal medicine to join its experienced medical team at their large GP hospital. The role focuses on providing valuable investigative and diagnostic support while contributing to the hospital’s high clinical standards.
The hospital is looking for a veterinary surgeon who is eager to develop a long-term career in internal medicine and has either completed a relevant certificate or is currently working towards one. Due to the large number of endoscopy and ultrasound cases managed at the hospital, previous experience in these areas would be particularly beneficial.
In this position, the successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining a high standard of evidence-based clinical care across the hospital. Responsibilities include participating in the consulting and medical rota, carrying out thorough consultations, examining patients, and developing appropriate management and treatment plans based on best practice and established protocols. The role also involves investigating cases using a range of diagnostic tools such as radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy and blood testing, while ensuring all medications are prescribed and dispensed in accordance with current legislation and professional guidelines.
The veterinary surgeon will be expected to work confidently both independently and as part of a team, recognising when to seek support from colleagues when necessary. Strong communication skills and a client-focused approach are essential, alongside sound clinical reasoning and effective time management. The role also contributes to maintaining a positive working environment, supporting strong teamwork and high morale within the hospital.
They deliver a comprehensive first opinion, emergency, critical care and referral service for its own clients as well as a network of more than 20 local branches. The hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostic facilities including a CT scanner and commercial laboratory, while a highly skilled clinical team regularly performs advanced orthopaedic, soft tissue and minimally invasive surgeries on site.
The successful candidate will become part of a large and supportive multidisciplinary team consisting of approximately 25 veterinary surgeons, 27 registered veterinary nurses, 14 student nurses, 7 veterinary care assistants and a substantial front-of-house team dedicated to maintaining exceptional client care. An established management structure provides further support, including a senior internal medicine vet, senior RVNs, two deputy head nurses, a head nurse, head vet and a hospital manager.
The rota operates on a six-week rotation, averaging 40 hours per week across four days. This includes a 1 in 3 Saturday and 1 in 6 Sunday rotation, along with up to two bank holidays per year. The role also forms part of the last-resort on-call rota, approximately once every two weeks.
Located on the outskirts of urban Essex, the hospital offers easy access to both the countryside and central London. The hospital is within a short walk of a Central Line station, making travel into the city extremely convenient. The area itself is known for its green spaces, including the nearby Bluebell Woods, as well as a wide selection of independent restaurants, cafés, bakeries and pubs. While there is no on-site parking available, public transport options are plentiful with nearby tube stations and bus routes.
The salary for this full-time role ranges from £55,000 to £73,000, depending on experience and allowing for growth within the position. In addition, the practice offers a generous benefits package including 6.6 weeks of annual leave including bank holidays, private medical insurance with BUPA, up to £2,000 CPD allowance with five paid CPD days per year, and relocation assistance where applicable.
