Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon
Permanent | Full-Time South Yorkshire
My clients is a family-run, independent small animal practice in South Yorkshire, offering a permanent full-time opportunity for a motivated Veterinary Surgeon to join a supportive, friendly, and well-established team.
This role is ideally suited to a Veterinary Surgeon with at least 12 months of UK small animal experience who is keen to expand both medical and surgical skills within a cheerful and encouraging environment. The successful candidate will join a team of 14 enthusiastic vets, including 4 certificate holders, where collaboration, mentoring, and shared learning are strongly encouraged.
All operating and hospitalised cases are managed at the practice’s fully equipped Main Centre, which houses five operating theatres and supports a highly varied caseload. The team routinely performs 20–30 different surgical procedures each day, and every vet benefits from two hours of operating time daily, allowing rapid development of clinical confidence and skills. The Main Centre also includes an in-house Hydrotherapy and Physiotherapy Centre. In addition, the practice operates seven consulting-only branch practices, each with two consulting rooms, nurse assistance, and full air conditioning. All sites, including the Main Centre, are air-conditioned for year-round comfort. The practice uses the RX Works computer system.
Veterinary Surgeons are supported by a highly skilled nursing team of 14 Registered Veterinary Nurses and 5 Auxiliary Nurses, ensuring consistently high standards of patient and client care.
They place a strong emphasis on work-life balance. Vets benefit from a set two-hour lunch break every day, alternate four- and five-day working weeks, and an average 7.5-hour working day. There are no night emergencies, and weekend work is limited to one Saturday or Sunday every five weeks, working 8:00am to 5:00pm.
The salary for this position ranges from £60,000 to £80,000 per annum, depending on experience. Additional benefits include six weeks’ holiday plus all but one Bank Holiday, a £3,000 CPD allowance, VDS fees covered, and a vehicle provided for both work and personal use. Fully furnished accommodation is also available if required.
The practice is based in Barnsley, close to Sheffield and the Pennines, offering easy access to outdoor activities, excellent schools, and affordable housing. The location is within approximately one hour of five major airports.
Applicants should be confident with a good level of basic surgical skills, and demonstrate a positive, team-focused approach to clinical work.
