Job Title: Lead Clinical Director – Small Animal
Location: Scottish Borders
Salary: Up to £85,000 per annum, depending on experience
Contract Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Are you ready to step into a leadership role that combines clinical excellence with strategic direction? My client are looking for a forward-thinking and motivated Lead Clinical Director to lead a very passionate team, help shape the future of the practice, and elevate the standard of care we provide to patients.
Based in the stunning Scottish Borders, this is a rare opportunity to work in an environment that offers both professional reward and an outstanding quality of life. With open countryside, vibrant local communities, and just a 45-minute drive from Edinburgh, this location strikes the perfect balance between connectivity and calm.
In this role, you’ll be guiding two well-established, RCVS-accredited practices—You’ll work closely with the Farm Clinical Director, Practice Managers, Clinical Nursing Managers, and Lead Vets to foster collaboration, maintain high clinical standards, and lead a cohesive and forward-thinking leadership team.
This position allows you to focus clinically on the Small Animal side of the business, while also participating in equine and farm out-of-hours care. You’ll have the opportunity to use and grow your leadership and business development skills, contribute to shaping long-term strategy, and support the ongoing success and growth of the practices.
One Practice boasts a friendly and enthusiastic team, an expanding companion animal caseload, and a reputation as the UK’s leading stem cell and regenerative medicine referral centre. Recent investments include a purpose-built large animal unit and rehabilitation facilities equipped with a hydrotherapy treadmill and supported by qualified veterinary physiotherapists. The other is a vibrant, forward-thinking practice that blends a strong heritage with a commitment to innovation. It recently received significant investment to upgrade its facilities, enabling the expansion of services and providing a modern, progressive working environment. The practice is RCVS-accredited and holds a Bronze iiE Sustainability award.
They are looking for an RCVS-registered veterinary surgeon with leadership experience and a passion for high-quality clinical care. You should bring excellent communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and the confidence to lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team. Experience in Small Animal clinical work is essential, and an ability to engage clients and teams alike will be key to your success in this role.
Your working week will consist of 40 hours, spread over four or five days, with one night per week on-call and participation in a 1-in-5 weekend out-of-hours rota (with time off in lieu). In return, you’ll receive a generous salary package, flexible working arrangements, and an opportunity to make a lasting impact in a thriving, community-focused practice.
Alongside a competitive salary, they offer a relocation package, five weeks of holiday plus bank holidays and birthday leave, paid RCVS and VDS fees, a funded CPD allowance (including certificates where approved), access to an extensive online CPD library, and genuine career progression opportunities. Additional benefits include staff discounts, life assurance, enhanced sickness and family leave, an electric car salary sacrifice scheme, employer pension contributions, and a comprehensive wellness program including an employee assistance service, eyecare vouchers, flu jabs, and a cycle-to-work scheme. A recruitment referral reward scheme is also available.
