Small Animal Vet for Large Team - just 45 minutes from Bristol and Cardiff

Steph Ward
Our client in South Wales have a fantastic opportunity for a new graduate small animal vet to join their friendly and experienced team.

In this role, you will be provided with a real work-life balance and career progression, so you can achieve your full potential.

The team is made up of 13 vets, including 3 GDP mentors and certificate holders in Surgery, Medicine, and Radiology, as well as a visiting Cardiologist – meaning there is excellent case support when required and great learning opportunities. The practice is spread across 4 well-equipped, RCVS accredited sites, and there is a varied and interesting caseload.
They have all the usual toys you would expect, and all branches have ultrasound, digital x-ray, and blood analysers.
There is 24-hour care available Monday to Friday at the groups main site in Abergavenny, ensuring Vets are able to provide fantastic patient care and really learn from their cases.
Very little is referred, although full clinical freedom is given where this is required.

Full time vets work a four-day week with 1 in 5 Saturdays, and a weeknight inpatient only on-call rota. There is a dedicated night shift nurse on-site overnight, so Vets are only called when necessary and full support from experienced Vets will be available. Emergency calls out-of-hours are covered by an external out-of-hours provider.
Inpatients are transferred Saturday afternoon, so there is no Saturday evening, Sunday, or Bank Holiday work.
The team believe this rota gives staff a great opportunity to be able to follow cases through to learn and develop, while still allowing plenty of free time away from work. The rota is designed with set breaks throughout the day for phone calls/case research. You will experience a great mix of consulting and operating, both at the hospital and at Branches. Sole charge will not be required until you have the necessary skills and confidence.

The team are experienced in helping New Graduates start their professional career. There is a Practice culture of case discussions among colleagues, with questions encouraged. The rota is designed to ensure an experienced Vet will always be available, so New Graduates can develop their confidence and own surgical case load.
They tailor the induction process to each individual graduate, as no two people are the same. They will ensure that they build your caseload to allow you to become a confident and happy first opinion Vet, focusing not only on clinical skills, but how to communicate with clients, decision making, and case reviews. Alongside the support from our team, you will also be enrolled on the New Graduate program to further develop your skills and confidence at the start of your career.

The interview process will involve being able to discuss the role with one of our Vets who joined us as a New Graduate in 2020, as it is very important to the team that you know as much about this role as possible to ensure it is the right match for you.

This client strongly believes in developing their vets, and certificates are fully supported, along with all other career aspirations. They want you to be able to grow and develop as part of their team. They also believe in winter/summer parties, pizza, and having fun outside of work!

The practice is located in a beautiful part of the country near the Brecon Beacons National Park, with great transport links and easy access to Bristol and Cardiff in 45 minutes, and 2.5 hours to London. Rowing, fell running, knitting, cooking, and enjoying the many “foodie” opportunities our area provides are just some of the activities our team enjoy outside of work.

Some of the benefits of this role include:
– 4-day week
– CPD: graduate scheme first 2 years, then 5 days and 1750 pa
– 28 days Holiday, including Bank Holidays
– Pension
– Access to Health Shield
