Senior Veterinary Surgeon for well-equipped, large practice - West Yorkshire
Our client are looking to recruit a permanent Senior Veterinary Surgeon to join our team based at their practice near Castleford in West Yorkshire. This role would suit an experienced Vet, looking to take the next step in their career.
The practice is well equipped benefitting from digital Xray, ultrasound, (S6 from IMV), IM3 dental machine, tonopen and Abaxis biochemistry and haematology machines. If a candidate is wanting additional equipment to develop a new service/ skill or standard, then the team are more than happy to discuss. Endoscopy, multiparameter monitoring, bair hugger, and ventilator are also available at the Hospital branch (12 miles away), where full overnight support is also provided for critical/complex cases requiring 24/7 nursing.
This role will include a mixture of consulting, case workup and surgery. You will also actively encourage the development of team members, provide training, easily accessed support and clinical guidance. The practice is supported by two highly trained RVN’s (one a Senior), who offer extended nurse clinics including physiotherapy and nutrition consults. There is also a permanent VCA on reception trained in bereavement support and several student nurses and trainees.
An ability to work up and follow through cases, work sole charge and be a keen Surgeon, are all essential to this role. As is an ability to train others, lead by example, provide mentorship and support, and provide constructive, at -the-time feedback are also required. You will also be able to communicate effectively with a diverse team and maintain a positive work-based culture are essential for this role.
Ideally you will be enrolled on the VetGDP Programme, or willing to complete as the Senior Veterinary Surgeon will support a new graduate Vet to work alongside them for next year’s intake.
You will be working alongside the existing team of 14 Vets and will benefit from plenty of clinical support as the team encourage collaboration and a team ethos across all departments. This is a superbly friendly, appreciative, and supportive team, looking for the right person with shared values.
The current team includes 16 RVNS - many of whom have additional post grad qualifications, a team of dedicated, supportive receptionsits - many of whom hold BVRA and customer service qualifications, a Surgical Director who is an Advanced Practitioner in Surgery with a certificate in imaging also. The team also benefit from a visiting Advanced Practitioner in Cardiology who also holds a certificate in medicine, and they have a further Vet with a GP certificate in surgery.
In addition the team have highly motivated clients and are proud to be able to support access to healthcare for all, with a clain direct facility commonly being used.
The leadership team consists of a Surgical Director Vet, a Practice Manager, Deputy Practice Manager, Operations Manager, two further Senior Vets, two Head Nurses, and a Head Receptionist. The proide themselves to listen, to be proactive, to be kind, and we look to constantly improve for the benefit of our team, our patients, and our clients.
The standard rota benefits from a four-day working week, with 1:4 weekends (based at our main Hospital). Shift times for this role during the week would be 9am-7pm, with an hour for dinner. The last half hour of the day is appointment free, designated for client call back time, to report labs or follow up on cases etc. Holidays include 5 weeks standard holiday plus bank holiday entitlement, plus an additional buy and sell scheme. Whilst the team do require Bank Holiday cover throughout the year, this is shared equally amongst the team and they fully close the practice on Christmas Day allowing everyone to enjoy the day with their family.
Accommodation and vehicle can be provided as part of a package. CPD allowance of 1750 per annum (higher if Advanced Practitioner) and VDS and RCVS retention fees funded. Professional membership of choice. Staff discount scheme, Pension and Healthshield available. Enhanced sick pay, enhanced parental leave and cycle to work scheme. They run a journal club, a Google classroom with Vet and nurse streams, plus a WhatsApp Vet group for clinical chatter.
This team are amazing, friendly, a bit loud and fun. They enjoy each other’s company and like to reward their teams with regular treats, picnics, Christmas parties and more. Afternoon tea delivered to all sites and a mobile ice cream trike are just some of the treats the team have enjoyed so far this year. They have a wellbeing group and offer extensive support to ensure both mental health and physical health are kept in the best possible condition. They want their teams to be happy and healthy.

Post graduate certificates in all disciplines are welcome and there is the opportunity to undertake funded certification for those who are interested.
Salary depending on experience starting 50k-60k DOE, additional certificates/experience/OV may negotiate higher salary bracket.
