SA Hospital seeks RVN for exciting role with development opportunities - South Devon

Steph Ward
This client are a Veterinary Hospital in beautiful South Devon and are looking for a qualified RVN to join their current team of 7 RVNs and 6 Vets.

The Hospital Nursing team are trained in all aspects of hospital work, (including the use of advanced anaesthesia techniques) and the team participate in all areas of the practice - including carrying out a lot of referral surgery, a significant amount of referral Ophthalmology surgery plus Laparoscopy, soft tissue and some orthopaedic surgery.
The nurse team also do first opinion surgeries and further Hospital facilities include CT, ultrasound, digital radiography and dental radiography and Endoscopy suite along with a visiting referral Cardiology service.

The team are looking for a positive, enthusiastic and hard working RVN with an interest in surgery or anaesthesia would be preferable but not essential. And whilst the nursing workload is predominantly surgery based, you will be expected to be happy and willing to assist elsewhere as required.

The team at the hospital work fantastically well together and have made adjustments to the nursing rota to try and encourage "down-time" where possible. The weekend cover is split so you either cover a Saturday (when the practice is only open on a Saturday morning then it is inpatient cover) or a Friday/Sunday (which is just inpatient care).
The first opinion out of hours is located at an external Emergency service which means the nursing teams do not cover out of hours phone answering.

The role will include setting up specialist theatres, getting kits ready, calculating & administering medications, fluid calculations, placing catheters, learning advanced anaesthesia techniques (including the use of neuromuscular blockade) and implementing them, use of ventilators (full training given), use of multiparameter monitors, endoscope maintenance (with training) along with general nursing duties.
There will also be opportunities to potentially learn new anaesthesia skills and hopefully develop into a confident nurse with advanced anaesthesia skills.

This position offers a good opportunity for learning and growth with full support from other experienced Qualified RVN's and referral specialists.
You will need to have a positive attitude and an enthusiasm to learn. Although you don't need to have existing advanced anaesthesia knowledge, you must be keen to learn about it.
The majority of the nursing team have come from general first opinion practice backgrounds and can therefore offer full training and support in any areas that you might be unfamiliar with.

The successful candidate will be a great team player and willing to help out where required if asked.
CPD is encouraged and funded as the team try to nurture any interests that you have and encompass it where the team can in practice. They are pleased to have supported one of their nurses through her surgical advanced nursing diploma.

Applicants will work shifts which will mean you will work between 38-47 hours/week average but it manifests as some weeks you will work 31 hours/week and then others will be more if you have a patient that needs to stay in on a weekend. If you do work a weekend, you will always get the Monday off.
The rota does include nights but they do not start until 4pm and finish at 8am the following day, so you essentially get the day off before the night shift and the day off after the night shift.

The teams rota, staff benefits package and salary are benchmarked against other jobs in the area.
Benefits include: a generous salary (where experience and further qualifications are further rewarded); extra leave for long service; a shift pattern designed to promote a great work-life balance, allowing for a day off before and after a night shift and allowing a day off following a half weekend on call – we’re happy to chat you through the details!

Located in an idyllic village on the outskirts of Dartmoor this location has it all including beaches, outdoor activities and all within 1 hour drive to the cities of Exeter and Plymouth.
