Amazing Opportunity to join a Mixed Practice and enjoy Island life on the Outer Hebrides
We have a fantastic opportunity for those individuals who enjoy outdoor pursuits such as hill walking on the rugged coast, surfing the waves of the golden beaches, bird watching from sea eagles to corncrakes or perhaps fishing for salmon, sea and brown trout on one of the many freshwater lochs. And maybe even some wild swimming for hardier souls!
My client are looking to recruit a mixed veterinary surgeon to join their small and very experienced team at their independent practice on the Isle of Benbecula in the windswept and beautiful Outer Hebrides, off the North West coast of Scotland. All levels of experience are welcome to apply.
The work comprises of mix of 45% large animal, most of which are kept on crofts (small holdings) and a few small farms, 45% small animal (ranging from routine consultations to more advanced surgery) and the rest being equine, with this client base growing steadily.
The team have all the standard equipment you would expect, including digital x-ray, brand new PMS, tup and bull fertility testing equipment, small and large animal biochemistry machine, large animal scanner and are in the process of modernising the Practice further to continue to expand and improve the service they can offer to clients.
You will be working alongside the practice owner and veterinary assistant. They team are very keen to support a candidate through certificates/ further training and there is real scope for
development in areas of personal interest which could then be offered as a new service at the Practice. The current on call rota is 1 in 3.
This is ideally a full time role but my client are happy to hear from candidates who would prefer a more flexible/part time working rota and the package would be adjusted accordingly.
The day-to-day job is very flexible, when the vets are not in surgery/consults/on large animal calls, you are not expected to hang about at the practice, instead you are free to do as you please with your 'free time' - go home, walk the dogs, go for lunch, head down the beach... so long as you can be contacted.
The team would really love for someone to have plans to stay on the island long term and become part of this fantastic community. There is real chance for someone/a family to make a home on the Island and become an integral part of a very close-knit community. Due to the boom in pet ownership and thriving crofting community, the vets are seen as high valued members of the community.
There is a freedom that isn't easily found in the rest of the UK. Miles and miles of beaches on the west, rugged hills on the east coast, fresh water and sea lochs in-between for fishing enthusiasts, world renowned golf courses, so many groups/clubs: wild swimming, running & park run, squash, athletics, football, crafts, art, poetry, yoga, fitness, kick boxing, sailing, nature/wildlife, horse riding, dancing, singing, choir, theatre etc the list goes on! You could have a fully packed schedule every day of the week. There are festivals in the summer and there is a fantastic music scene. There is also a big push on Gaelic, there are learner courses and plenty of opportunity for an immersive experience when speaking to locals!
Although this is a chain of islands, they are all connected via causeways/ferries, and have all the amenities you would get anywhere else rural - nurseries, schools, gyms, banks, supermarkets, butchers/bakery, florists, swimming pool, airport (2x daily flights to Glasgow that take about 50mins), distillery, takeaways, hotels, restaurants and cafes
The islands are also well connected with superfast broadband across the area, making home working an option for those with partners that might need a speedy internet connection.
