Full or Part-Time Small Animal Vet for new practice in East Sussex

Steph Ward
Imagine taking your lunch break whilst watching the waves roll onto the beach?

Our independent client is restoring and reopening an old practice as part of their growth and expansion of their existing team in West Sussex.

The teams constant endeavour is to uphold their one-pet-one-vet concept; they register patients with one of their vets, and always attempt to allow them to see the same vet, at each appointment, unless their problem is an emergency, or the vet is on leave.

You will be working closely with the highly experienced vet, and owner, in supporting the re-opening of this tiny practice. You will help to re-create great client bonds, with a caring work ethic for both patients and clients.
This role would suit a colleague confident in all skills who prefers to work in a small team. It might also suit a new graduate looking for a VetGDP Advisor and peer reviewer to mentor them. The owner has both these qualifications, plus a GPCert(SAM) and CertVR, and is an OV.

The client list will grow slowly, initially allowing 30 minute appointments and more time for procedures. The successful candidate would literally be involved in every patient’s care, and every aspect of this tiny practice’s growth.

The owner intends to remain proudly independent for at least the next ten years. She wants you to be able to think for yourself, and make a treatment plan that is best for the patient AND the client's budget, not be expected to follow a head-office-set guidelines for ‘care’.

The practice will have 1 consulting room, 1 operating theatre, with modern operating lights plus digital radiography, dental radiography, new ultrasound machine, sevoflurane anaesthesia, in-house lab plus a visiting scanner, endoscopist, laser acupuncturist, ophthalmologist, dermatologist and orthopaedic surgeon.
The team will consist at first of the owner and veterinary surgeon full time, plus the new colleague vet, one RVN and a receptionist and the team will grow as the client list grows.

This client currently has a team of people working in the other practice who are well motivated and happy. Many of their staff are extremely long-serving as they are encouraged to be the best they can be, and to follow their own dreams and goals.
As a group they have won multiple awards for their customer service, including Top 25 BestUKVets in 2019 and 2020, and BestUKVets Best in West Sussex 2021.

The successful candidate will ideally have one or more years experience with ambition, but the team can also consider a new graduate with an enthusiam to learn and succeed. There will be sole charge on a Saturday morning, and for an hour or two in the evenings. However, support and second cover can easily be arranged if appropriate, until the recruit feels confident.
The role can be either full or part time with flexible weekday shifts, no OOH, paid overtime, 1 in 3 Saturday mornings, plus tea and cake provided.

Normal clinic hours:
8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday
8.30am to 12.30 on Saturday

Out of hours arrangements:
Referred to another clinic 20 minutes away. This role does not have any OOH.

Number of hours to be worked per week:
To be negotiated. Full time would be 36 - 40 hours per week (candidate’s choice), plus one in three Saturday mornings. This would include up to two late evening clinics, (minimum of one) and two early starts per week.
Part-time would be considered, precise hours to be discussed, but at least one evening clinic per week is preferred for all staff.

Pay Scale from new graduate to 10 years qualified: 31,500 - 72,800
Part-time colleagues are paid according to the hours agreed. Note that I pay over-time as an hourly addition to the agreed salary.

The successful candidate will have 5 weeks' paid holiday, paid CPD and memberships, and support towards a certificate, if required.

Out of hours payment/bonuses:
We pay the usual hourly rate for any time worked over the contracted hours per week, ie you are not expected to work overtime free of charge!
The team regularly receive whole team bonuses.

Accommodation/car (if applicable):
Neither provided, but assistance to acquire these could be cheerfully offered, if required.

This is an extraordinarily beautiful Sussex village on the coast. The South Downs National Park is on the doorstep and separates us from the excitement of cosmopolitan Brighton, with its Pavilion, theatres, festivals, pier and beach. We are surrounded by pretty farmland with extensive dog walks and riding options, both equine and pedal powered. Within easy reach of central London and the rest of the world via Gatwick, yet peaceful and spacious when at home. The clinic is situated at the centre of the village, with its attractive shops. It backs onto the coastal path by the sea, and has excellent public transport connections.
