An experienced veterinary surgeon is sought to join a friendly small animal practice in Burgess Hill, located just 20 minutes from Brighton. The role offers a salary ranging from £50,000 to £80,000, depending on experience, and is open to clinicians with either a consulting or surgical focus. Applications from consulting-only vets are also welcomed.
The practice is committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate care, with a strong emphasis on thorough case workups and meaningful client relationships. With a busy caseload and a supportive working environment, the successful candidate will have excellent opportunities for both professional development and job satisfaction.
The team consists of eight experienced vets, a long-term locum, and a recently qualified vet who trained within the practice, alongside nine qualified nurses, trainee nurses, and a dedicated front-of-house team. Many team members hold additional certifications, and ongoing professional development is actively encouraged, with support available to pursue individual clinical interests.
Team members consistently highlight the positive and collaborative culture within the practice, noting the supportive colleagues, high clinical standards, and flexibility that enables a healthy work-life balance.
The practice itself is purpose-built and recently refurbished, featuring modern equipment such as digital X-ray, ultrasound, in-house laboratory facilities, and separate wards for dogs, cats, and isolation cases. A loyal client base, with a significant proportion of insured patients, allows clinicians to provide a high standard of care.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about delivering exceptional patient care and working effectively within a team. While an interest in areas such as cardiology or ophthalmology would be advantageous, candidates with a surgical focus or those who are confident all-rounders are equally encouraged to apply. The experienced nursing team, many of whom have worked in referral settings, provide excellent support for surgical cases.
Flexible working arrangements are available, with a preference for 30–40 hours per week, though part-time options can be discussed. Typical shifts are either 8am–6pm or 10am–8pm, with only one late shift per week and one weekend per month. There are no out-of-hours responsibilities.
In addition to a competitive salary, the role offers generous CPD funding, support for further qualifications, paid professional memberships (including RCVS, VDS, BVA, and ISFM), and the opportunity to work alongside a welcoming team in a location close to both Brighton and the South Downs National Park.
