Senior Veterinary Surgeon Vacancy, South Wales

An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced Senior Veterinary Surgeon to join an independent, vet-owned RCVS-accredited small animal hospital in Bridgend, South Wales. This flexible position is ideal for a confident clinician who enjoys a varied first-opinion caseload, emergency work, and mentoring less experienced colleagues while helping to maintain high clinical standards.
Owned and led by Advanced Practitioners, the hospital offers a supportive environment where collaboration, professional development, and excellent patient care are at the forefront. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the role around their experience and interests, choosing between a five-day first on-call position or a four-day senior back-up role providing support to the on-call team.
The role combines consultations, surgery, inpatient care and emergency work, alongside dedicated time for administration and protected lunch breaks. There is also flexibility to develop particular clinical interests while continuing to enjoy a varied GP caseload. A key part of the position involves mentoring recent graduates, supporting clinical development within the team, and contributing to teaching and case discussions.
The rota varies depending on the chosen role. The senior back-up position includes a four-day week with 8-hour shifts, one in four weekend mornings caring for inpatients and one in four second on-call duties. The first on-call role follows a seven-night rota with seven recovery days afterwards, plus two weekend morning shifts across an 11-week cycle. The practice provides its own out-of-hours service, ensuring continuity of care for patients, with a Registered Veterinary Nurse and Student Veterinary Nurse on site around the clock. Senior back-up is available for complex cases, and accommodation is available for first on-call vets if required.
The hospital is a VetGDP-approved training practice with a strong emphasis on mentoring, learning and career progression. Facilities include digital radiography, Doppler ultrasound, a dedicated dental suite with dental radiography, a comprehensive in-house laboratory including Sedivue, endoscopy equipment, and separate wards for cats, dogs and exotic patients. The successful candidate can expect a competitive salary of £40,000 to £65,000, depending on experience and responsibilities, alongside an excellent benefits package that includes 33 days' holiday with the option to purchase additional leave, five days of CPD with a £1,500 allowance, enhanced funding for Advanced Practitioners, and payment of RCVS, VDS and one additional professional membership.
