This small animal hospital in Wimbledon is seeking a dedicated nocturnal Registered Veterinary Nurse to join its established night team on a permanent basis. This opportunity is well suited to a qualified RVN, or a student nearing qualification, who has experience in emergency and critical care and is confident managing overnight cases and inpatient wards. The role involves working closely with an on-site veterinary surgeon to deliver a high standard of care to patients admitted overnight, ensuring their comfort and wellbeing throughout their stay.
During night shifts, the successful candidate would take on a varied and responsible role. This includes assessing incoming cases, identifying levels of urgency, and responding appropriately, as well as assisting with procedures, inpatient care, and occasional consultations. Maintaining accurate and detailed patient records is a key aspect of the position, alongside ensuring that all hospitalised animals receive excellent care. Additional responsibilities include handling client communications with professionalism and empathy, supporting admissions, updating owners on their pets’ progress, and ensuring all equipment is properly cleaned, sterilised, and stored. The role also makes full use of Schedule 3 nursing skills, depending on experience and direction from the veterinary team.
The working pattern is designed to offer a strong work-life balance, following a rotating schedule of three nights on followed by seven nights off, then four nights on followed by seven nights off. This averages just over 30 hours per week, with shifts running from 7pm to 8am. Throughout these shifts, support is available not only from the on-site veterinary surgeon but also from the wider clinical management team during daytime hours if required.
They provide a diverse and interesting caseload, combining routine work with emergency and critical care. In addition to serving its own first opinion clients, the hospital also accepts referrals from surrounding practices, allowing exposure to more complex cases. The team is further supported by visiting specialists in areas such as orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, cardiology, and physiotherapy. As a fully equipped 24-hour facility, the hospital holds RCVS accreditation and has also been recognised with an ISFM Silver Award for its cat-friendly approach.
Located in Wimbledon, the hospital benefits from a convenient and attractive setting, within easy walking distance of Wimbledon station, which provides excellent transport links into central London. For those who drive, parking requirements are minimal due to the nature of the shift pattern.
The salary for this position ranges from £30,330 to £35,634 for the stated rota, equating to approximately £40,000 to £47,000 on a full-time equivalent basis, depending on experience and progression within the role. Ongoing professional development is actively encouraged, with support available for further training or certificates in emergency and critical care. Additional benefits include generous annual leave, a yearly CPD allowance with paid study leave, structured breaks, and access to a private healthcare scheme at a reduced rate, along with other wellbeing incentives.
