A new veterinary surgery is being launched, and an opportunity is available for an experienced Head Nurse to take a leading role in establishing and developing the nursing team from the very beginning. Rather than stepping into an existing system, this position offers the chance to help design how nursing is delivered within the practice and to shape the standards, culture, and day-to-day working approach.
The role involves taking responsibility for the nursing function across the surgery, ensuring consistently high standards of patient care and client experience while supporting smooth clinical operations. A key part of the position is creating an environment where nursing skills are fully recognised and effectively utilised, including the development of nurse-led services and the promotion of advanced clinical responsibilities such as Schedule 3 procedures. The Head Nurse will also play an important role in supporting student nurses, overseeing clinical coaching, and building a positive and collaborative team culture.
In addition to leadership responsibilities, the role remains clinically active, with oversight of nurse clinics, inpatient care, and theatre practice standards. It is a position with both clinical and operational influence, contributing directly to how the practice functions on a day-to-day basis as well as its long-term direction.
The working pattern is structured around full-time hours, typically four nine-hour days per week, with participation in a one-in-four weekend rota. The average working week is approximately 39 hours. There is also involvement in nurse care nights, with accommodation provided when required, and some flexibility may be considered depending on circumstances. This role is particularly suited to a qualified and registered Veterinary Nurse who takes pride in delivering excellent patient care, enjoys working collaboratively, and communicates confidently and compassionately. A proactive and adaptable approach is important, along with a strong desire to develop nursing skills and contribute to building something new from the outset.
The position sits within an independent, family-owned organisation focused on delivering high-quality care across its practices. The wider group invests heavily in creating modern, calm clinical environments that support both patient wellbeing and team satisfaction, alongside ongoing professional development for staff.
The benefits package includes structured support for continued development, funded professional fees, recognition schemes for nursing staff, and income protection. Additional wellbeing and work–life balance measures are in place, including annual leave entitlement, enhanced parental leave policies, compassionate leave, and access to wellbeing support resources.
