Veterinary Surgeon – GP Opportunity
My client in Abergavenny is seeking a confident and experienced first-opinion GP Veterinary Surgeon to join its close-knit and progressive team. This role is ideal for a well-rounded vet who is eager to contribute their knowledge and clinical skills within a supportive and forward-thinking environment.
The practice consists of four RCVS-accredited branches, all of which have recently undergone refurbishment and are equipped with modern facilities, including in-house blood analysers, ultrasound, and x-ray equipment. Abergavenny serves as the main hub and benefits from advanced technology such as digital radiography, dental x-ray, ultrasound, laser therapy, and blood gas machines. The practice also provides nurse-led inpatient care on-site during weekdays, ensuring continuity of care for patients.
Working alongside a highly experienced veterinary team of 12 vets, including certificate holders in medicine and radiology as well as visiting specialists, the successful candidate will benefit from strong clinical support and the freedom to manage cases with confidence. For those with an interest in surgery, mentorship from an Advanced Veterinary Practitioner is available to help develop more advanced surgical skills.
The practice places a strong emphasis on team culture, collaboration, and wellbeing. Staff are encouraged to maintain a genuine work-life balance, with dedicated administration time built into the day and a workplace culture that values support and flexibility. Career development is actively encouraged, whether through certificate study, leadership opportunities, or clinical specialisation, and flexible working arrangements are considered to ensure the right fit for both the individual and the team. The practice is also committed to supporting parents and fostering an enjoyable workplace environment, with regular social activities and welcoming spaces across its branches.
The role offers a salary of up to £65,000 per annum (pro rata), with higher consideration given to candidates holding a surgical certificate or an interest in pursuing one. Full-time hours are based on a four-day week, although part-time and flexible working patterns will be considered. The position includes participation in a 1 in 5 Saturday rota and a 1 in 6 inpatient on-call rota during weekdays only, with no overnight, weekend, or Bank Holiday on-call requirements. A dedicated night RVN supports inpatient care, and appointments are scheduled at 15-minute intervals, with an 8:45am start and the final appointment at 6:15pm.
Located on the edge of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, Abergavenny offers an excellent balance of countryside living and accessibility. Recently recognised as one of the best places to live in Wales, the area combines a vibrant community atmosphere with outstanding scenery and convenient transport links to Cardiff, Bristol, and London.
The position comes with an extensive benefits package. This includes generous annual leave, a £1,750 CPD allowance alongside paid CPD days, professional memberships and VDS cover, enhanced family leave policies, discounted veterinary fees, paid volunteering leave, health and wellbeing support, shopping and travel discounts, company sick pay, visa sponsorship, annual salary reviews, and ongoing career progression opportunities.
